The frost exposure of a location depends on the site specific microclimatic conditions which are mainly a factor of the altitude, orientation, inclination and land configuration of the field. Furthermore the existence of water bodies and management factors (e.g. soil coverage) play an important role. All these factors are difficult to assess; therefore frost insurance is faced with serious antiselection issues.
Frost prevention is applied in exposed regions cultivating fruits, grapes and other high value crops. The most important prevention methods are technical air circulation, sprinkler irrigation and direct heating.
